TOYOBO MC develops innovative Wastewater Treatment System for water-wash flexo plate processing
TOYOBO MC Corporation (hereinafter, “TOYOBO MC”) has developed a new “Wastewater Treatment System” that enables the reuse of developing wastewater discharged during the water-wash process in flexo plate processing. This system utilizes TOYOBO MC’s microfiltration (MF) membrane “FILPLATE™” to separate photopolymer components from the wastewater, and by reusing the treated water for plate development, it can reduce the amount of wastewater by up to 75%. We plan to launch an integrated unit combining this system with a water-wash plate processor within fiscal year 2026.
Since introducing “Printight™”, the world’s first water-wash letterpress plate in 1977, TOYOBO MC has led the way in environmentally friendly plate-making processes. Another flagship product, “Cosmolight™”, a water-wash flexo plate, combines water-washability with water-based ink resistance—two properties traditionally considered incompatible—and is highly regarded in overseas markets where flexo printing is widely adopted.
The MF membrane “FILPLATE™” incorporated in this system has already been used in industrial wastewater and sewage treatment. Its hydrophilic surface ensures stable permeability, while aeration-induced upward flow and bubbles effectively remove photopolymer layers from the membrane surface, preventing clogging and maintaining performance.
Through products such as “Printight™” and “Cosmolight™”, TOYOBO MC has promoted plate-making processes that eliminate the use of organic solvents. With the development of this new wastewater treatment system, the company will further contribute to reducing environmental impact in plate-making operations.
